Forebodingly, Adolph Hitler also signed this agreement and dutifully praised it in the February 22, 1929 issue of Völkischer Beobachter. Hitler wrote: “the fact that the Curia (Vatican) is now making its peace with Fascism shows that the Vatican trusts the new political realities far more than it did the former liberal democracy…” Hitler’s upcoming version of Mussolini’s Vatican-oriented Lateran Treaty would be called the Reich Concordat of July 20, 1933, and would be significantly more demanding of Hitler’s subservience to the Imperial Holy See (Vatican) than Mussolini’s.
